Why Corners exists
A continent of 1.4 billion people, 54 countries and thousands of living cultures — and on most of the world’s apps, it fits in a handful of pins.
When Africa is mapped from the outside, it comes out thin: the same three capitals, the same tourist-brochure captions, the same restaurants that could afford to be found. The market three streets over, the festival everyone in town is going to, the guesthouse a family has run for a generation — none of it makes the map.
We think that’s backwards. The people who live a place are the ones who know it. So Corners is built the other way around: seeded openly, claimed by the businesses themselves, and stamped by the explorers who actually show up. Not Africa as the world imagines it — Africa as it is.
Our mission
Put every corner of Africa on the map,
and a passport to reach it in every pocket.
What we believe
Africa first, not as a footnote
On the world’s apps the continent is a thin layer — a few pins in a few capitals. Corners is the whole map, built for it and nothing else.
Mapped from the inside out
The people who live a place know it best. Businesses claim their own listing; explorers leave the stamps. The map grows from the ground.
Open by default
We seed the map from open data (OpenStreetMap, ODbL) and free-licensed media — never scraped, always attributed. The commons stays a commons.
Built to include
Eight languages, a light app that installs on any phone, and a free tier for every venue. Discovery shouldn’t depend on your data plan.

Where we’re headed
A map is only the beginning. Corners is growing into a living network — one that senses what’s happening across the continent and relays it to whoever is nearby: the concert your favourite artist just announced, the holiday that turns a quiet town into a festival, the new spot that opened this week two streets away.
And it reaches both ways. For the diaspora, it’s a line home. For the traveller, it’s a way in. For the local, it’s the recognition that the place they love belongs on the map as much as anywhere else in the world. One passport, fifty-four countries, and a continent that finally maps itself.
